THE GOLDEN DISC
Originally, the golden disc was a marketing idea from the American recording
companies to draw the attention of newspapers to the fact that one of
their artists' albums had sold 1,000,000 copies. The first golden disc
was awarded to GLENN MILLER in the forties by RCA, for a run of a little
more than a million 78s. Gradually the golden disc became a firmly established institution
in the recording business.
The
"golden disc" given to the artist is actually a "master"
pressing of the LP, gold-plated by electrolysis.
Little
by little, debates took place in "the business", determining
whether sales should concern albums, "LP", "EP"
or "Singles" and consequentlyCD... The number sold for the
golden disc varied according to time and country : In France, in the
seventies, it was still awarded for 1,000,000 sold copies. Then things
changed... They ended up awarding this "reward" only for more
than 100,000 copies.
The
golden disc is the music industry award best
known to the general public. However the recording industry also gives
other trophies : silver discs , platinum discs, diamond discs
etc. 50,000 copies are enough to receive a silver disc.
The platinum disc is acquired from 300,000
copies. But to carry off a diamond disc
is more difficult : the diamond disc is
awarded for the sale of a million albums !
JEAN-CHRISTIAN
MICHEL has produced more than 5 million albums, crowned by 3 diamond disc ( Requiem, Aranjuez and Sacred Music ), three
platinum disc (Crucifixus, JQM and Ouverture
spatiale) and a dozen golden discs. Aranjuez sold more than 1,500,000
copies, which represents a virtually unequalled record !
